A contractor is a person or organization which contracts with another to have a work performed. According to the New Hampshire state statute RSA 281-A:18, a contractor who subcontracts all or any part of a contract shall bear the liability of the subcontractor of that contract for the payment of compensation to the employees of the subcontractor, unless the subcontractor has secured the payment of compensation. The statute further states that any contractor who shall become liable for compensation may recover the amount of the compensation paid and necessary expenses from the subcontractor.
